2009 Annual Report

Dear Public School Supporter,

Thank you for your interest and support as the Nashville Alliance advances its mission to serve the needs of Metro Nashville Public Schools through the strategic donation of private resources.

We are pleased to announce that we have raised and directed over $22 million in contributions to our schools since 2004.  You made this possible!

Last January, Metro Public Schools welcomed Dr. Jesse Register as the new Director of Schools.  In this short time, Dr. Register has begun to implement thoughtful and transformational change in our school district and has brought a creative reform agenda that is addressing many of the districts previous challenges.  We are pleased to partner with Dr. Register in setting priorities for private funding that will help to drive these changes and positively affect the long-term success of our students.

Teacher professional development remains one of our major commitments.  It began with the renovation of the Martin Professional Development Center, which was completed in 2008 after an enormous influx of private community donations.  This investment laid the groundwork and in its first year, more than 21,000 educators participated in training opportunities at the Martin Center.

In fact, we were ahead of the curve.  Quality teaching is a timely topic in today’s educational environment and The Alliance is well-positioned to advance this initiative.  For example, a grant from Healthways Foundation has provided distance-learning for teachers and a format for sharing best practices.  We also funded the development of a professional science laboratory at the Martin Center.  In partnership with Vanderbilt University’s Center for Science Outreach, the lab provides the latest in research-based training for science teachers.

But that’s not all.  Your gifts have helped complete another capital project and provided additional resources for science, math, music and reading – just to name a few.  We also launched a brand new website last year, making it easy for you to read about these and other initiatives at www.nashvillealliance.org.

The Nashville Alliance remains committed to the success of our public schools, student learning, and a better, stronger Nashville.  We look forward to your continued support as we expand this important work.
