Tennessee First to the Top Act of 2010: Update on Teacher Evaluation Advisory Committee
June 10, 2010

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Governor Bredesen recently appointed nine Tennesseans to serve on the Teacher Evaluation Advisory Committee (TEAC).  Nashville Alliance board member Darrell Freeman and ex-officio board member Dr. Jesse Register were both selected to be on the committee.  The committee was created by the General Assembly in a special legislative session in January to develop guidelines and criteria for the annual evaluation of teachers and principals for recommendation to the State Board of Education in accordance with the Tennessee First to the Top Act of 2010.  According to the TEAC’s timeline, the new evaluation system will launch statewide in July 2011.

“My desire is to bring some common sense principles to the process, similar to what we practice in business,” Freeman said. “The work of this committee will help to streamline the evaluation process and ensure it happens on a regular basis.”

The TEAC has conducted three public meetings to date. When the committee met in May, the agenda included the following items:  discussion of TEAC work terminology; committee expectations, timelines, roles and responsibilities; and a panel presentation by Hamilton County and Memphis City School leaders. More meetings are scheduled throughout the year.
